Discover Information Literacy video

I found that the Discover Information Literacy video was well thought out and arranged in an order that made sense. I liked that they started by showing that educational experts regard being information literate to be an important skill then moved on to defining the term. The approach they took of explaining their system and what each step involves then running through a demonstration of the process made it easy to understand. I agree with many of the comments about the music sounding like it came from a computer game. I also felt that the slides changed too quickly in a couple of places.

I learned from this video that it is important to consider the best types of sources for the information to be gathered, remember to use multiple search engines not just a couple, carefully organise your information then create the final expression of the research and reflect on what you did and how to improve next time. I also learned that people tend to be a bit lazy when looking for information.

The main point of the video seemed to be that as society uses computers more and more that it is increasingly important to be able to sift through the information available online to find useful, authoritative sources for learning about a topic. The other point that they were trying to get across was that by using a systematic approach to think about what information you need and what are the best types of resource to search in then you can find information efficiently. Then by checking the quality of the information and reflecting on how you went in finding the information you were seeking, you can ensure that you have answered the question properly.

I consider myself to be fairly information literate but not as much as I could be as I tend to search in books and journals for information. I am rather distrustful of websites when it comes to written information as I have only recently gained the skills to properly evaluate the information I find. When looking for pictorial information the main problem is all the data smog that gets in the way of finding the image that I am after and the lack of specificity associated with images online.

  1. Thank you for your thoughts, Simon. I particularly like your comments about the systematical approach used in the video and I strongly agree that if you follow this you are likely to find information of "quality". Well thought out and I hope by the end of the unit you can build on being "fairly" info lit to a highly confident researcher of information.
